Luongo, Ward and Fleury Audition for Team Canada

Three goaltenders affiliated with GDI garner Team Canada invites for their Summer Development Camp.

Goaltending Consultant Ian Clark is entering his fifth season working with All Star Roberto Luongo. Clark began his work with Luongo in 2001-02 in Florida with the Panthers. The two paired up again when Luongo was traded to Vancouver heading into the 2006/07 season.

Cam Ward's GDI connection goes back to his teenage years. Ward spent five years training with Clark at GDI's Pro Consulting camp before breaking into the NHL and going on to be the Conn Smythe Trophy winner and Stanley Cup Champion in his rookie season.

Current Stanley Cup Champion, Marc Andre Fleury spent his two Team Canada World Junior experiences teamed up with Clark. Clark was Team Canada's Goaltending Consultant for four years garnering two gold medals and two silver medals during this stretch.

Time will tell which goaltenders will represent Team Canada, but rest assured, GDI goalies will have a strong presence between the Team Canada's pipes.

GDI-Prairies is pleased to announce its goaltender specific dryland program delivered by Pro-Fitness

GOALIE SPECIFIC DRY LAND TRAINING

Pro-Fitness Training is proud to announce that we will now be offering our personalized goalie training sessions at The Rink Training Center. In the past 10 years Pro-Fitness has trained hundreds of goalies who have become top NHL draft picks, succeeded in the WHL and played at the highest level for their age category. The Rink is now offering the only goalie specific dry land training to compliment the on-ice component provided by GDI.

As goalies and goalie parents alike know, goalies are very different from forwards and defenseman. Throughout the season, they don’t get specialized instruction and are expected to get better by seeing 400-500 shots a practice. For this reason goalies seek specialized instruction away from team practices. Nowhere else will you find a program as all encompassing as this.

Pro-Fitness’ goalie specific dry land training covers all the bases in order to produce a better goal tender:

1) Size: Unless you are 6’4”, get bigger. Cover more net=save more shots
2) Strength, Power and Quickness: The stronger the goalie, the faster and more powerful vertical and lateral movements are.
3) Posterior Chain Development: Most goalies have a significantly weak posterior chain in comparison to the workload it encounters during competitive play. This leads to tissue specific back injuries over time. Training the posterior chain will help produce a long term, injury free goalie.
4) Posture: Teaching proper squatting technique and spinal positioning, which is essentially the goalies stance, makes vertical movements much quicker and more efficient and again reduces the likelihood of injury. Additionally, strengthening the upper back will enable the goalie to maintain a position that benefits hand and arm positioning, allowing them to stay open and tall.
5) Conditioning: Being a well-conditioned goalie, means staying in the game. Conditioning along with all other training will be goalie specific.

Pro-Fitness Training will be offering our 1 hour+ training sessions in packages of 12 as of October 5th, 2009. All workouts will be age specific, as well as individualized based on in-gym and on-ice assessments.

Time slots are as follows:
Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Friday’s: 7am-11am appointments
Tuesday’s and Thursday’s: 4:30pm and 5:30pm appointments
Saturday’s: 9am-12noon appointments
*all sessions are by appointment only

Cost: $280.00 +GST per 12 session package

Inspirational and Motivating

One of the toughest abilities for any hockey player is to be able to adapt to new situations quickly. Leading up to the pre-season there are many different situations that you may be experiencing such as: being released from your desired team, moving, playing with a different out of town team, or directly moving down a level.

As a goaltender you must always stay positive and look forward to every new challenge and situation that lies ahead. If you have a motive to achieve success then internally you will want to participate in tough and exciting situations. If you have a cognitive state of anxiety and fear then nervousness towards each new situation will tend to overcome your ability to play well and succeed.

Some goaltenders thrive under pressure while others would simply prefer not to be part of this ultimate head on competition. Believe in yourself, your abilities as a goaltender, and most of all have fun and enjoy what you are doing.

For inspiration, check out the following write up and interview with former goaltender of the New York Rangers, GDI President, Dan Blackburn.

MJHL Recent News

The Swan Valley Stampeders defeated the Neepawa Natives in this weeks closing MJHL exhibition game before the regular season. The Stampeders rose to victory with a 2-1 shootout win. A great performance by both teams, the matchup can be described as a "goaltenders duel" as both goaltenders combined for a total of 85 regulation shots. Chris Ward of the Stampeders was awarded with the win as Kelly Andrew received the shootout loss.

In other Manitoba Junior News, Joe Caligiuri recently signed with the Dauphin Kings. Caligiuri brings a wealth of talent and experience to the roster for the Kings. His resume includes playing 3 years in the WHL with the Brandon Wheat Kings and then the Prince George Cougars.
Dauphin will be a standout team this year as they host the 2010 RBC Cup. Caligiuri hopes to help jump start the Kings season with a win on the road coming September 11th, against the Winnipeg Saints.

Previously, both goaltenders, Chris Ward and Joe Caligiuri, played for the Winnipeg Wild of the Manitoba AAA Provincial Midget Hockey League. Each of them recently instructed at this summers week long Regional Camp in Winnipeg.
