Every head coach wants great goaltending since this is a vital component to any championship run.

Head coaches are also more than willing to criticize goaltenders for poor performances; however, how many coaches are willing to commit ice time during team practices for goaltender-specific development? That is the key question!

Why are goalie parents paying for team practices if their child is not getting any instruction during that ice-time? This is something non-goalie parents just do not care about or understand.

Head coaches must be reminded that throughout their hour practices that they should always find time to have drills involving their goaltenders. If you don't know much about goaltending that is fine, but, it is important to create drills that accommodate your goaltenders ability to relate to game situations.

For example, compare the 3 man weave vs. the horse-shoe, two generic drills used by coaches over the past ten years. The difference in comparison is that a simple horse-shoe drill allows the goaltender to go through a full save-execution process, which includes following the puck after controlling it. A common belief is that goalies must face a lot of shots to get warmed up. This is true, but in the same respect goaltenders must be able to face a shot and demonstrate the same save process they would demonstrate in a game.

As a head coach, remember that the goaltender is quite important to a positive competitive outcome. If you are not able to provide on ice development seek out a qualified progressive instructor for this purpose.
