Dauphin Kings inched a step closer to capturing their second ANAVET Cup with a 5-3 victory Wednesday over La Ronge Ice Wolves.
The next game of the series is this evening at 7:30. MJHL GDI - Goaltender of the month was once again Joe Calijuri who has helped the Kings hold a convincing lead in the series.
MJHL News: Kings, who set a franchise-high 50 wins this season, now hold a convincing 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Game 5 goes Thursday night at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place.
“We got it done tonight,” Kings’ GM and head coach Marlin Murray told CKDM-Dauphin. “It was good effort by our guys. We were a bit mentally tired, I suppose from everything we’ve been through over the last couple of days, but that was no excuse. We battled through that.
“It was an emotional win on Tuesday and maybe we expected it to be easy tonight. We had a fairly good conversation in the dressing room after the first. I thought that in the second period we were real good. We’re in a pretty good situation right now (up 3-1).”
Murray will be the first to admit that the toughest game to win is the fourth. But he’s also quick to note that his team is very focused and determined to win an ANAVET Cup.
The last time the Kings won the ANAVET was back in 1983 when Barry Trotz was their captain. These days Trotz is behind the bench of the Nashville Predators.
Troy Hunter put the Kings on the scoreboard in the first period with his ninth of the playoffs.
After 40 minutes the Kings held a 4-2 lead thanks to goals from Patrick Kozyra (first of the playoffs), Shane Luke (his 11th) and Dallas Drysdale (bullet from the point).
From that point on, the odds were heavily in favour of the Kings, who owned an impressive 10-0 record when ahead after two periods.
Both teams exchanged goals in the final period with Joe Kot scoring the insurance goals for the Kings midway through the third.
Kot was the hero Saturday in La Ronge when he scored the tying goal with just three seconds left in regulation time. Kings went on to win in double overtime.
Murray was quick to praise the strong play of Kot, who has played exceptional over the ANAVET Cup playoffs.
